The new Stafford Western Access Route is designed to ease the traffic congestion on the western side of the town and to provide access for the new Burleyfields developments (Bellway and Taylor Wimpey). It will link the Newport Road with the A34 North going via Martin Drive, the Doxey railway bridge, a new Sainsburys' roundabout and coming out on Foregate street by Halfords. Doxey Road will join the route at a new roundabout on the site of the Universal (Saint Gobain) works.
[Jan 2020] Work has been going on for some months with piles being driven on the edge of the Marshes to support a viaduct between Madford Retail Park and Timberfields road. The demolition of the old Universal works is now nearly complete. The disruption to road traffic will continue for well over a year.
The contractors (Amey) held an 'Information Event' at their Site Office on 22nd January to explain what was, and what will be happening.
The railway bridge will be closed to traffic for some months around the end of 2020. By that time the new link from Doxey Road to Martin Drive will be in place and traffic to and from town will be diverted via Martin Drive and Newport Road. Pedestrians will still be able to use the railway bridge.
